Starting the New Year off, last week the Energy Right team attended a policy discussion hosted by AFP with members of the Hanover legislative delegation. The event provided community members with an opportunity to engage directly with their elected representatives and ask questions ahead of the 2026 General Assembly session.

The Virginian Pilot
Column: Virginia’s future depends on clean energy solutions

The suspension of Virginia’s offshore wind project raises alarms for both climate and energy goals, advocates say. National Audubon Society argues that offshore wind delivers affordable, large-scale clean power while posing far less risk to wildlife than unchecked climate change. With renewables now the cheapest new generation and Virginia lagging peers, halting wind development threatens environmental protection, public health, and long-term economic stability.

Lamont Bagby have reintroduced bills to significantly increase utility investments in battery storage, arguing that faster-to-build, lower-cost storage can reduce peak energy costs and limit reliance on new fossil fuel plants as the 2026 legislative session begins.

Virginia Regulators Approve New Dominion Rates, Assign More Costs to Data Centers

Virginia’s State Corporation Commission approved a Dominion Energy rate increase that will add about $16 a month to the typical residential bill in 2026, while shifting more grid upgrade costs onto large data center customers. Regulators trimmed Dominion’s requested profit margin and overall recovery, calling the decision a first step toward fairness as electricity demand surges.

Beginning in 2027, a new data center rate class will require long-term contracts and higher upfront payments to better reflect the true cost of serving massive loads. Advocates welcomed progress but warned that residential customers will still shoulder a significant share of grid upgrade costs tied to rapid data center growth.
